The Bundesbank has launched an investigation into the increasing incidence of counterfeit money being issued through ATMs in Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Berlin.

Security features make it easy to distinguish real bills from «homemade»
The first warning signs came from Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia: in these federal states, there were cases of ATMs issuing counterfeit banknotes. On Wednesday 5 May, the Berliner Zeitung newspaper published an interview with Jens Bachmann, head of the anti-counterfeiting department of the Berlin police. According to the expert, ten cases of this kind are noted in Berlin every year.
Although the bank would have to exchange the banknote issued to the customer by his ATM, in practice it is difficult to do so because the banknote numbers are not recorded in the ATMs, Bachman explained.
Who fills ATMs with money
As a rule, banks entrust this work to special collection companies. According to Martin Hildebrandt, spokesman for the federal industry association BDWS, collectors work exclusively with banknotes verified by the Bundesbank. At the same time, Hildebrandt admitted that he could not rule out the presence in the law-abiding community itself of «black sheep» who are too lazy to give money for verification. Meanwhile, the Bundesbank has already announced the start of a large-scale investigation of the confirmed episodes.

Many people forget about this rule, although according to the spokesman for the Bundesbank Johannes Korz (Johannes Korz), anyone can distinguish a counterfeit bill from a real one by a few simple signs. Even if you do not look through each of them in search of watermarks, it is enough to pay attention to the iridescent overflow of numbers or silvery protective foil.
If the client has suspicions about the authenticity of the banknote, and the bank is already closed, the Criminal Department recommends calling the police anyway. The task of the police is not to confirm the authenticity of the bill, but to record the moment the money was taken from the machine. With the police receipt, the client will be able to receive his money during working hours if the bill was counterfeit, and it will be easier for the bank to establish the route of the counterfeit money.
